In the Teaching, Learning and Development stream of the MEd
degree at Brock University, I was able to explore my interests of educational
technology in the classroom.
My current research surrounds 21st century literacy and literacy learners. Under the advisement of Dr. Jennifer Rowsell, I am
investigating the use of iPad’s in the primary/junior (Grades 1 to 6) language
arts classroom. I am completing a full iPad application audit on applications
designed for literacy and how they are successfully or unsuccessfully implemented
in the classroom. This entails measuring these applications up against current
Ontario curriculum and how they relate to the developmental level of children
and youth. I am also exploring the metacognitive changes in students who use
technology, in specific applications, and how this differs from traditional
ways of learning. In this process, I will be writing a handbook for teachers on
how to effectively use the iPad and iPad applications in their classrooms. I
will be designing lessons that specifically target these applications.

Are there any iPad applications that you use in
your literacy classroom? Feel free to comment or email laura.m.gleeson@gmail.com with your
